Grief Takes a Hike

An overnight adventure for families who have experienced the death of a grandparent, mother, father, child or other significant person, Grief Takes a Hike allows participants to come together in a supportive setting to experience the therapeutic value of nature in Wisconsin.  This time allows for families to share and process feelings while enjoying indoor and outdoor activities, and to interact with others who have also experienced the death of a loved one.

Grief Take a Hike teaches families to:
  • Identify positive and helpful coping skills
  • Understand the differences in adult and child grief
  • Understand the value of group process
  • Enable the bereaved to process feelings

GTAH is available to families at no cost. In conjunction with Provena Staint Joseph Hospital, FVVH provides transportation, meals and lodging to campers completely free of charge. Spanish interpreters are available.

The 2009 Grief Takes a Hike took place Friday through Sunday, June 5-7.  We had 13 families (15 adults and 21 children) attend, with groups and activities led by FVVH staff and trained volunteers. Families attending found it to be a time of reflecting, hope, togetherness and rejuvenation for the future.

Our 2010 Grief Takes a Hike will be held August 6 through 8 at the beautiful Inspiration Retreat Center in Walworth, Wisconsin. If your family -- or a family you know -- could benefit from Grief Takes a Hike, call Christy Pitol at (630) 232-2233, ext. 230 for more information and/or to reserve your place.
