Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are an integral part of Fox Valley Volunteer Hospice.  Each volunteer is valued and respected for the gifts they bring to the work of hospice while making a difference in the lives of those we serve, making a valuable contribution to the community and enhancing their own wellbeing.  Please complete the volunteer application and return to FVVH if you are interested in joining our team of volunteers.

Available volunteer opportunities include:
  • Ambassadors
    Our ambassadors educate churches, clubs and companies about our organization through speaking engagements.  Ambassadors also represent FVVH at United Way, community and other special events.

  • Bakers
    Bakers bake bread for bereaved individuals and/or cookies for patients.

  • Bereavement One-on-One
    Volunteers are trained to provide individual emotional support to grieving adults in the community.

  • Call Forwarding
    Volunteers answer calls at their homes between the hours of 4:30 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. one day per week. FVVH office phones are forwarded to the volunteer’s home to answer questions about hospice.  Callers can be referred to a nurse in cases of emergencies.

  • Children’s Group Facilitators
    Facilitators are trained to lead support groups for children who have suffered a loss or are experiencing anticipatory grief.

  • Clerical Support
    Clerical support volunteers spend time at the FVVH office completing a range of duties including answering phones, data entry, typing, copying and assembling packets.  Special projects are also available at times.

  • Community Outreach
    Bilingual volunteers are taught to reach out to the community through correspondence and presentations with area clubs, churches and organizations.

  • Event Coordinator
    Plans and coordinates one or more of the various events held for patients, bereaved individuals, families and staff including the Annual Memorial Service, Boat Trip, Holiday Celebration and various open houses.

  • Gardener
    Volunteers help maintain the 20th Anniversary Memorial Garden by weeding, pruning, watering, etc. as well as quarterly landscaping.

  • Hands of Hope Clinic Volunteer

    Training is provided to prepare volunteers to provide a healing presence and hospitality to patients and their family members who are waiting for or undergoing treatments at two community cancer care centers.

  • Interpreter
    Bilingual individuals are trained to provide interpretation during home visits to patients.

  • Mailing Support
    Opportunities are available to fold letters, stuff envelopes, label, and sort and bundle the various newsletters produced.

  • Monthly Gift Delivery
    Volunteers are needed who are available weekdays or early evening to deliver special treats including flowers, cards, baked goods, etc. to patients. Each month, special treats such as flowers, cards, baked goods, etc. are delivered to brighten our patients’ days.

  • Patient and Family Care Volunteers
    Patient and Family Care volunteers often serve as a catalyst for the patient and families, listening and then encouraging the family to finish unfinished business, to heal old wounds in relationships and to prepare the family for life without the dying person.  Volunteers often provide respite care to allow the primary caregiver to rest or take a social break.  27 hour training is provided twice each year.

  • Professional Services
    Professional individuals are need to assist patients in their homes.  Some available positions include hairstylist, manicurist, massage therapist, chaplain, tax advisor and music/art therapist.  These individuals must provide their services at no charge and have proper credentials.

  • Sewing
    Volunteers who can sew are asked to make “Hug Pillows” and teddy bears for the children of hospice patients and Herbie’s Friends participants.  Other various sewing projects arise as well.

  • Special Events and Fundraising
    Volunteers are needed to assist with Garden Party, FVVH’s annual luncheon and fashion show.  Committee members are involved in obtaining prizes and centerpiece decorations, making seating arrangements, working with retailers on fashion, selling raffle tickets and much more.

  • Support Groups Aides and Facilitators
    Support group aides and facilitators help with or lead discussions within our various support groups.  They also help nurture those involved and are available as a resource person.  Bereavement training is provided and required.

  • Translators
    Bilingual volunteers are needed to translate written material from English to Spanish.
